And the latest batch of members of the Circolo Canottieri Aniene is a perfect embodiment of Giovanni Malagò’s approach – and his world. Following in the footsteps of Francesco Toth, Dino Zoff, Roberto Mandini, Marco Tardelli and Marcello Lippi, the president of the club – but above all of CONI – has once again succeeded in bringing together sport and finance by opening the club’s membership to a rather diverse group. For now, they are (not all) merely ‘occasional members’. There is the world of football, with the membership of AS Roma’s chairman, James Pallotta, and Leicester’s former Roma-born manager, Claudio Ranieri – who was unceremoniously sacked after leading the team to Premier League victory – whom his friend Enrico Vanzina persuaded to join. Then there’s the business world, with the incoming CEO of Poste Italiane, Matteo Del Fante, and top executive Fabio Corsico. And the political sphere, with the Sicilian MP Ignazio Abrignani.
