Permanent jobs are losing their appeal. People are looking to ‘prospects’ instead

In the box-office hit Where am I going? The teacher asks the child, Checco Zalone: “What would you like to do when you grow up?”. The young actor’s curt reply: “A permanent job”. The joke – which is certainly amusing – stems from the fact that, for decades, Italians’ greatest aspiration has been to secure a permanent contract.

In reality, however, it seems that the myth of job security is beginning to crumble. Whether it is the realisation that achieving job stability is becoming increasingly difficult, or the desire not to feel tied down to the same job for an entire career, priorities are certainly changing.
