Forget the ‘old’ cliché that low turnout penalises the centre-right more than the centre-left, because the trend has shifted since the fall of the First Republic. Daniele Marini, scientific director of ‘Community Media Research’, analyses the results of the first round of the local elections in Trieste and Pordenone, drawing a clear line between the past and the present. But that is not all, because his assessment goes further and explains why the centre-right, is stronger in the north-east than in the rest of Italy, and why the M5S is failing to make a breakthrough in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, whilst also focusing on the run-offs on 19 June, where Roberto Dipiazza and Alessandro Ciriani are starting with a clear lead – not solely by virtue of the margin they secured at the polls on Sunday.
