Do Italians really feel they are part of the ‘European system’?
On 25 May, Italians are set to go to the polls to elect the 73 MEPs who will represent them in the European Parliament for the next five years. These are the first elections since the Treaty of Lisbon, in 2009, conferred a series of new and important powers on the European Parliament; and, for the first time, voters themselves will have a say in who will lead the European Union’s executive body towards strengthening or challenging the Union.
How is public confidence in European institutions evolving? What are the benefits of the single currency during this prolonged crisis? These are just some of the questions that the LaST survey aims to answer by examining the issue of territorial identity and Italians’ perceptions of the European Union.
