In the face of a negative assessment of our country's institutional ruling class, it is possible - conversely - to identify the characteristics of the one that Italians feel they need. And it is here that we can see how the previous negative judgement is not merely a sign of anti-politics, but rather an expression of the need for good politics. Asked what the characteristics of Italy's future ruling class should be, opinions focus equally on two dimensions. On the one hand, the leadership must possess a strategic vision and be able to anticipate and tackle problems (35.3%). In particular, men and older people, entrepreneurs and those on the centre and centre-right support this option. On the other hand, it is hoped that he is endowed with morality, legality and ethics (33.6%), a choice emphasised above all by the female component, the middle age groups, those living in the North and who are politically positioned on the centre-left and, on the other hand, among those who are not politically positioned. Thirdly, comes the dimension of professional competence (16.6%), desired above all by younger people, those living in the South and those with a centre-right political orientation. Strategic vision towards the future, morality and ethics constitute the two key elements of the leadership profile, even better if combined with good technical competence. In other words, what Italy has lacked, at least in recent years.
