Until a few years ago, travelling by train or metro, one could observe several people leafing through a newspaper or magazine, reading a book. Today, they have become rare figures. It is much easier to meet those who compulsive use their smartphone or tablet to read a magazine, search for information or frequent social networks. Technological tools have not eliminated, but rather incorporated and transformed previous communication systemsthus the newspaper, the magazine, the book or the communication take on a digital declination. But that is not all. Choosing a holiday or restaurant, booking a trip, buying goods or services, banking and much more are done via the Internet and with special applications (apps). In real time and from anywhere. So much so that the irritation is palpable when we cannot connect to the net, when the internet connection is too slow or there is no wi-fi.

As the last istat report (Citizens and New Technologies, 2014) Italian households' access to the web is increasing, the gaps between social groups in the possession of technological goods are decreasing, and the use of e-commerce and cloud services is growing. At a closer look, Italy is still at the bottom of the European ranking for Internet access (25th place out of 27), but in any case we are increasingly immersed in the use of new communication technologies. But what are the spin-offs in the different areas of our lives as a result of their use?

The LaST survey attempted to address this dimension by asking Italians to assess how they perceive this presence, whether it is improving, worsening or irrelevant in their daily lives. And the results do not appear so obvious. In general, an attitude of disenchantment can be observed regarding the actual fallout. As if the diffusion and everyday practicability of such technologies had, on the one hand, quickly made people forget the previous conditions. And, on the other, they are now taken for granted in some ways, usable by definition. Thus, for none of the proposed areas of life the majority of respondents clearly see progress. The only aspect that comes close to the 50% threshold is that of personal social relations: 44.4% perceive a positive change. But at the same time, it is also the one where positions are most polarised: 16.0% consider that they have worsened. Immediately after, we find those who perceive improvements in their professional life (32.4%). And, next, paired up, we have those who observe progress in the streamlining of bureaucratic procedures (21.0%) and in work or study realities (20.7%). At the bottom of this ranking we have the possibility of comparing services (14.0%) and getting information (10.2%). Thus, if we exclude the dimension of social relations, for all other areas the opinion clearly prevails that the new technologies will not substantially change the conditions of one's life. Even less so the level of information which, paradoxically, should be one of the areas most privileged by the use of technological tools.

Summing up the different orientations, it is possible to outline a general summary measure. Three basic expectations of the effects of the new communication technologies on the various spheres of everyday life thus emerge. The prevailing group is composed of the "indifferent' (68.4%) i.e. by those who do not see any particular change. Prominent among these, paradoxically, are the younger generations, those who are active in the world of work and students, those who have a university degree and are hyper-connected to the web. In other words, it is as if the 'digital natives' and intensive web users are already accustomed to these tools and perceive such technologies as a basic tool, which is already part of their lives. The second group is the "enthusiastic' (30.0%) formed by those who perceive improvements brought about by the new technologies in almost all areas. It is interesting to note that this profile is particularly prevalent among the older population, those with low educational qualifications and those who use the net only for personal reasons and not for work. Thus, if the new technologies constitute a discovery (because they did not exist or were not previously used), the greater the possibility of grasping the positive changes that have occurred. Finally, very marginal is the group of "pessimists' (1.6%) i.e. those who identify only worsening in the introduction of new technologies.

But there is, finally, another aspect that these findings highlight. The improving impact of the new communication technologies, at least in the perception of a large part of the respondents, stops at their use within the personal sphere, their own relationships: the use of social networks as a sign of a new way of communicating. But it does not (at least yet) have a systemic impact: in one's work or study, in one's profession, in one's relationship with the public administration or in the use of services. And so the third-last place that our country occupies in the European ranking makes us realise how far (digital) we still have to go before we can really perceive the advantages induced by the new communication technologies.

Daniele Marini

Technological innovations pervade our daily experience, changing behaviour and lifestyles.
