However, they also do not disdain getting involved in issues related to the area in which they live, rather than in social voluntary work. On the other hand, activities related to politics, protest or peace issues are less popular. In general, the male component, the youngest (up to 34 years) and the oldest (over 55 years), those living in the North East, those who are self-employed, pensioners and students take part more in these activities. Above all, the core of so-called 'militants' who are exclusively dedicated to the activities of an association is a marginal share (0.8%), while numerically more consistent are those who participate non-exclusively (interested: 21.6%) or only occasionally (occasional: 68.5%). This is the map of social commitment and the profile of those who participate in their activities.

A first aspect of interest comes from the thematic areas of participation. Cultural events (59.3%) together with sports events (52.1%) appear to be at the top of Italians' preferences. While this second sphere of activity is traditionally the most popular, it is interesting to emphasise how the varied world of cultural initiatives constitutes an absolutely significant pole of attraction. Evidently, there is a widespread demand - in a broad sense - for culture, in-depth study or even just aesthetics that calls for new paths and new approaches. We need only refer to the growing success of exhibitions, rather than the multiplication of festival occasions on various topics. Not far behind, we then encounter participation in initiatives linked to environmental and health issues (49.2%), to the worlds of social volunteering (49.1%), to the territory or the cities in which one lives (40.9%): thus, areas of commitment linked to the enhancement or defence of one's environment, to the construction of solidarity networks. Although of a different modality, it is nevertheless interesting to observe how a significant proportion of citizens actively engage in initiatives such as festivals or village fairs (44.3%). Activities that in recent years have become very widespread in the area and, although with different values, are no less important in building social capital. More often than not, in fact, these are initiatives aimed at raising funds for local communities, through to those of historical re-enactment and recovery of traditions. If we exclude those who participate in professional or trade associations (30.4%), the field of politics in general is the least frequented, although about a third (35.6%) of respondents have participated in initiatives promoted by political parties or movements. This does not mean that they are militants, but citizens who, out of personal interest, have attended some of these occasions.

Le iniziative culturali, del loisir e sportive sono gli ambiti cui più volentieri partecipano gli italiani.
