Italians do not wish to do without the EU and the euro, but they would like to renegotiate the (economic) ties that bind them to Europe. This is what emerges from the LaST survey, which examined Italians\u2019 attitudes towards the EU and the consequences of Italy\u2019s potential exit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe euro is more highly regarded than it appears to be,\u201d notes Daniele Marini, Scientific Director of CMR, \u201cthe majority of Italians (57.0 per cent) believe it has caused complications, but also believe it was a necessary tool for the construction of the Union. If we add to this the one-fifth of respondents (20.6 per cent) who mainly highlight its advantages, we can see that, in general, the population appreciates the role and value of having a single currency across the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the proportion of those who emphasise only the negative aspects is by no means insignificant: 22.4 per cent hold this view (these are mainly those who identify with a national-local identity, men, people in their 50s with a low level of education, the unemployed and residents of Southern Italy). Nevertheless, according to 72.4 per cent, abandoning the euro and returning to the lira would worsen Italy\u2019s economic situation. A slightly smaller proportion (68.5 per cent) believe that leaving the EU would exacerbate the economic crisis.<\/p>\n

It is the measures imposed on our country by the EU that are causing concern. Whilst 36.4 per cent believe that Italy\u2019s situation would deteriorate further if we did not comply with those constraints, a similar proportion (35.6 per cent) believe that our prospects would improve. Those most concerned about a possible exit from the EU and the euro are those who express a more open sense of territorial identity: residents of the North, the younger and older generations, and the working classes. Conversely, the most critical voices are found amongst the unemployed and business owners \u2013 in other words, those who have borne the brunt of the effects of those decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not, therefore, a question of initiating a process of withdrawal from the European institution and its currency,\u201d continues Marini, \u201cbut rather of discussing and negotiating the measures adopted in recent years, which are considered not entirely suitable for resolving the crisis. On the other hand, the very same European and international monetary institutions that previously imposed those constraints have, for some time now, been reassessing them and questioning their actual effectiveness.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
