The issue of the younger generation has come back to the fore in recent years, aided by the difficulties generated by the crisis. Clearly, various data tell of conditions that are becoming more and more complicated. From youth unemployment that shows no sign of abating, to young people discouraged from entering active life or study. From the demographic decline that is thinning out the new generations themselves, to the brain drain from our country, to the low social mobility that characterises us. In short, putting this puzzle together, the outcome is decidedly negative. The crisis has undoubtedly accentuated the difficulties, but the roots of these phenomena go back further in time and are rooted in the inability of our ruling class (and not only the political class) to plan for the future, to make choices not exclusively linked to short-term consensus. But it is not only objective conditions that highlight the problems of the younger generations. There is also a collective imagination, certain stereotypes that stigmatise them: how can we forget the definitions of 'bamboccioni' or 'choosy' that have made much noise in public opinion. However, which young people are we talking about? In reality, it is difficult to define them because the boundaries and rituals that prefigured the transition from youth to adulthood and then old age have frayed. Ours is a society obsessed with being (and appearing) young. Paradoxically, it has fewer and fewer young people and offers them few opportunities. It is enough to observe the behaviour of those parents who dress and act like their children, where it is hard to see the differences. Cosmetic surgery, cosmetics, physical activity do everything to prolong the idea of youth. To such an extent that old age itself (moreover, the real new frontier) must be lived in a youthful way.
