Trentino and South Tyrol, 8 October 2016<\/a><\/p>\nThe history of Italy as a united country is little more than 150 years old, yet even today there is still a struggle to affirm the idea of an identity with which to identify. There has been no lack of secessionist and independence drives in the past decades, which in more recent times have given way to autonomist instances, particularly in some northern regions. The crisis and economic difficulties that have not yet been absorbed; a political and institutional system that has been unstable for many years and that has before it a delicate passage such as that of constitutional reform; the scandals and malpractice that continually signal the existence of a very labile civic conscience: these are all factors that certainly do not help to build a national identity in which to mirror oneself. So much so that northeasterners (Community Media Research), as the first character that defines being Italian, highlight 'disunity', where 'everyone goes their own way' (28.6%), an opinion that is particularly widespread in Friuli Venezia Giulia (42.0%) and Trentino Alto Adige (41.9%). Could it be otherwise in a country where each professional category boasts - for itself, of course - rights and privileges derived from specific peculiarities without the maintenance of which the entire country would fall into irreversible decline? And so taxi drivers, pharmacists, notaries, lawyers, accountants, journalists, doctors, truck drivers, pilots (and the list could go on and on) as soon as there is even an attempt to amend the rules or open up their professional perimeter to the market, they leap to the defence of their category. Hence, the propensity to think only of 'special interests' (16.4%) and being bent on 'trying to circumvent laws' (12.2%). Ultimately, the selfj'accuse<\/em> is encapsulated in emphasising that we live by 'the art of making do' (15.5%), particularly among the inhabitants of Veneto (20.4%). These four definitions encapsulate the dominant characteristics that the northeasterners themselves - on closer inspection - attribute to themselves. Of course, there is no lack of acknowledgement that they also have positive traits, but these are highlighted in second place. \"Creativity and inventiveness\" (12.8%), being able to develop \"professional excellence\" (9.6%) or performing \"extraordinary deeds\" (4.0%) constitute characterising aspects of fellow citizens. But they are placed more in the background, on a later level: as a second choice. So much so that practically no one among the north-eastern respondents believes that Italians feel proud of being Italians (1.8%): we look at each other with derision, we do not recognise ourselves. Summing up the answers offered by the respondents, two general profiles of the characters in which the north-easterners are reflected emerge. By far the most prevalent is the one that defines fellow citizens as driven by 'do-it-yourself' logic (72.9%), especially in Friuli Venezia Giulia (87.7%), where the particularistic and individualistic dimension has the upper hand. It is the younger generations that hold this opinion most prominently. On the other hand, just over a quarter of those interviewed (27.1%) place more emphasis on positive characteristics and see their fellow countrymen above all as 'talented', especially in Veneto (26.4%) and Trentino Alto Adige (24.9%), among the more adult generations.<\/p>\nNortheasterners, and with them Italians, have a multiplicity of characters, changing like the figures created by the tiles of a kaleidoscope. On the whole, darker colours prevail, but brighter hues are not lacking. Above all, there is a lack of a unifying identity to refer to. A paradoxical identity: capable of bringing out the specificities and diversities that make up the Northeast and Italy, but within a common project. One that makes the 'particular' part of a 'universal' project.<\/p>\n
