\u2018Green\u2019 and \u2018innovation\u2019 are the two key characteristics highlighted by those interviewed. A country where concern for the environment (71.0 per cent) and the capacity to bring about innovation (68.9 per cent) must be the main pillars upon which we build our communities. A commitment to a green environment now cuts across different social strata, but is supported with particular vigour by women, whilst an innovative society is particularly favoured by those living in the North-East. In both cases, political self-identification \u2013 which ranges from the centre to the centre-left and includes those who do not identify with traditional political alignments \u2013 indicates a key factor in shaping these interests.<\/p>\n

These two factors are followed by a second set of characteristics that appear to be paradoxical. People would like to see an Italy that is international (58.8 per cent) and enterprising (53.8 per cent), as well as supportive (54.2 per cent) and tolerant (50.6 per cent). But at the same time, one that is safe (58.2%). In short, a society where the willingness to be open and to engage with other cultures and peoples does not undermine a sense of security or respect for the law. A society where citizens feel protected.<\/p>\n

It is no coincidence that the social atmosphere for which there is the least enthusiasm seems to point towards the \u2018Italian way\u2019 of living together. People do not want a country closed off within its local identities (28.5 per cent), nor do they want it to be multi-ethnic (28.6 per cent) or excessively metropolitan (14.9 per cent). It is the Italy of small and medium-sized local communities that is envisaged as the kind of society where the quality of life and relationships can still flourish.
\nBeyond the ranking of values, by using a statistical technique (factor analysis), it is possible to identify which of these cluster most closely together, thereby defining a common framework: a map of meanings. This has resulted in three groups. The first can be defined as the map of \u2018welcoming\u2019 values. These are those who would like to see a country characterised by solidarity, internationalism, tolerance and multi-ethnicity. The respondents who most strongly support this vision are the youngest (under 24), women, those on the left, centre-left and centre of the political spectrum, and those living in Central Italy. The second group can be defined around the idea of an Italy of \u2018dynamic communities\u2019: in this case, respondents describe the country of the future as environmentally friendly, enterprising and innovative, supportive, yet safe. The image of a metropolitan and multi-ethnic Italy seems to lie at the opposite end of the spectrum. This set of values is supported, above all, by those in their 50s, by those who identify as centrist or do not identify with any political party, and by those living in Southern Italy. Finally, the third category points to a paradox: those who would like to see an Italy characterised by a greater sense of local identity whilst, at the same time, possessing a metropolitan dimension. The so-called \u2018glocals\u2019 \u2013 that is, those who balance local and global identities. This approach is supported above all by the younger generations (under 34s), women, those on the centre-right of the political spectrum, and entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

So, an Italy with a \u2018welcoming\u2019 social atmosphere, made up of \u2018dynamic communities\u2019 and \u2018glocal\u2019, embodies the different facets that define the attitudes of Italians.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
